GLP-1s may offer better dementia protection than metformin

The International Diabetes Federation reports there were about 589 million adults around the world living with diabetes in 2024, with 90% of these having type 2 diabetes. Past studies show that people who have type 2 diabetes — a chronic condition where the body does not use its insulin properly — are at a higher risk of developing dementia.

Could the Cure for Diabetes Be Hiding in a Berry?

A traditional desert berry could reshape the future of diabetes care. In a world where diabetes is rising rapidly—projected to impact 750 million people by 2045—there’s growing interest in natural therapies that treat more than just symptoms. One such discovery is the “desert cherry”, or Nitraria roborowskii Kom (NRK), a wild berry long used in traditional Chinese medicine. Now, science is catching up, with promising research showing this plant might help reset the body’s metabolic balance. Could this ancient remedy become a modern-day breakthrough?

What you need to know about insulin supply issues in the UK

On 23 July 2025, the DHSC issued a Medicine Supply Notification for Eli Lilly’s Humulin insulin range in 10ml vials, which are being discontinued. This includes: Humulin I 100units/ml suspension for injection 10ml vials, Humulin M3 100units/ml suspension for injection 10ml vials, and Humulin S 100units/ml solution for injection 10ml vials. It is anticipated there will be no stock of Humulin I 10ml vials by the end of April 2026 and no stock of Humulin M3 or Humulin S 10ml vials by the end of May 2026.

Feeling tired all the time? It may signal underlying problems like cancer, diabetes or mental health issues

You know how it’s like when you’ve had a late night. The following day, your battery just can’t seem to last past lunchtime. By 2pm, you’re ready to tap out. But those tired days can usually be remedied with a nap or a few nights’ good sleep. The situation is different when you consistently wake up to your body and mind saying “no, thank you” and “can we stay in bed?”.

“In medical terms, fatigue is usually a more prolonged and persistent state of physical, mental, or emotional exhaustion,” said Dr Sky Koh, an associate consultant and family physician with National University Polyclinics. “Fatigue also affects your ability to perform daily activities and may not be relieved by rest or sleep.”

Is Diabetes Actually a Brain-Centered Disease?

Inactivating specific brain neurons normalized blood sugar in diabetic mice without affecting body weight. Successfully managing type 2 diabetes may depend more on targeting specific brain neurons than on addressing obesity or insulin resistance alone, according to findings published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. For several years, researchers have known that hyperactivity of a subset of neurons located in the hypothalamus, called AgRP neurons, is common in mice with diabetes.

Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are conducted to collect data regarding the safety and efficacy of new drug and device development. There are several steps and stages of approval in the clinical trials process before a drug or device can be sold in the consumer market, if ever.

This study aims to culturally adapt an existing American Diabetes Association (ADA)-recognized diabetes self-management and support or DSMES (Diabetes Self Management Education Support) program (Project Dulce) and integrate an evidence-based text messaging program (Dulce Digital) for implementation in Filipino Americans (FAs) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Cholesterol Lowering and Residual Risk in Diabetes, Type 1 (CHORD1)

This is a prospective, interventional, cohort study, meaning that researchers will follow and observe a group of enrolled study participants over a period of time (one to two months) to gather information and record any developments of the outcomes in question.

Precision Dosing of Metformin in Youth With T2D (PRECISE_T2D)

The purpose of this study to compare the typically prescribed dose of metformin (1000mg twice a day) with a higher dose of metformin (1350mg twice a day).

A Study to Better Understand the Role of the Hormones Glucagon and Insulin in the Progression of Diabetes

The purpose of this study is to determine the longitudinal effect of diabetes-associated variation in TCF7L2 on a-cell function and the contribution of a-cell function to longitudinal glucose tolerance and EGP in non-diabetic subjects.
